Who Makes Island Batik?

According to Island Batik, the company was established in 1997 and runs its own manufacturing facility in a village in Bali. The wax is stamped onto the cloth by hand, the fabric is dyed, washed and dried, and it is laid out in the sun to help set strong, colorfast color. Today the collections carry the Lumin Fabrics name alongside Island Batik, and you will see both on labels and listings, including ours. What Is Batik Fabric?

Batik is a wax-resist dyeing technique. Hot wax is applied to cloth, by hand-drawing or with a stamp (often called a tjap), and the fabric is dyed. Waxed areas resist the dye. The wax is then removed, and the process may be repeated to layer colors. Because the dye penetrates the cloth rather than sitting on top as a print, batiks look nearly as rich on the back as on the front.

Strip pack or 10" stack?

• Choose a strip pack for fast, linear designs: races, rails, log cabins, bargello, stacked coins. One pack makes a roughly 50" × 64" race quilt.
• Choose a 10" stack when you want bigger shapes or maximum flexibility. One stack makes a 57" × 66½" patchwork throw or cuts into 168 charm squares.
• Buy both from the same collection for a coordinated quilt with strips, squares and matching binding.

Does Batik Fabric Bleed?

It can, especially deep reds, purples, blues and blacks on the first wash, because hand-dyed fabrics can hold some excess dye. That doesn't mean the fabric is poor quality, and it is easy to manage:

1. Test a scrap. Drop a small piece in hot water with a white paper towel. If the water or towel colors, plan for it.
2. Use color-catcher sheets the first few times the finished quilt is washed.
3. Wash the finished quilt in cool water with a gentle detergent. Don't let a wet quilt sit balled up; dye transfers when wet fabric stays in contact.

How to Sew and Quilt With Batiks

• Needle: start with a fresh, sharp needle (a microtex or quilting needle works well) to pierce the tight weave cleanly. Our needle guide explains sizes.
• Thread: a fine, strong 50wt cotton or polyester blends into seams. For quilting, try a thread that picks up one of the collection's accent colors. See how to choose thread color.
• Rotary blade: batiks dull blades a little faster; a sharp blade prevents chewed edges.
• Pressing: batiks press crisply. Press rather than iron, and use a pressing cloth if you're worried about shine on dark colors.
