Quilting has a naming problem: half the fabric aisle sounds like a bakery. Jelly rolls. Layer cakes. Charm packs. Nobody hands beginners a translation card.
Here's the secret once you decode the names: precuts are the fastest, safest way to make a beautiful quilt. A designer already curated the colors so everything coordinates, and the factory already did the most tedious cutting. You skip straight to sewing.
This guide decodes every precut size, shows what each one is best at making, and gives you the math for how many you need.

| Name | Size | Typically Contains | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jelly Roll / Strip Pack | 2.5" x 44" strips | 40 strips | Strip quilts, log cabins, bindings, race quilts |
| Layer Cake / 10" Stacker | 10" x 10" squares | 42 squares | Big-block quilts, HSTs, fast baby quilts |
| Charm Pack | 5" x 5" squares | ~42 squares | Patchwork, scrappy quilts, table runners |
| Fat Quarter | 18" x 22" | Sold singly or bundled | Applique, mixed cutting, bags & smalls |
| Fat Eighth | 9" x 22" | Bundles | Scrappy variety on a budget |

Forty coordinated 2.5" strips, each the full width of fabric. The famous "jelly roll race" quilt — sew all 40 strips end to end, fold, and seam repeatedly — produces a lap quilt top in an afternoon. Strips also feed log cabins, rail fences, and scrappy bindings.
The math: one 40-strip pack ≈ lap-size race quilt top (≈50" x 60"). Two packs make a generous queen top.

Batik strip packs like Splish Splash bring hand-dyed depth that reads "expensive" in a finished quilt — with zero extra effort.

Forty-two 10" squares of an entire fabric collection. Use them whole for a fast big-block quilt, slice each into four 5" squares, or pair two and sew around the edge for eight half-square triangles at once — the 10" square is the Swiss Army knife of precuts.
The math: 42 squares set 6 x 7 with sashing ≈ generous throw. One stacker + background yardage = twin.

Around 42 five-inch squares — the cheapest way to own a whole collection. Perfect for simple patchwork, scrappy borders, and testing whether you love a fabric line before buying yardage. Two charm packs + background = classic baby quilt.
A quarter yard cut fat — 18" x 22" instead of a skinny 9" x 44" strip — so you can cut larger shapes from it. Fat quarters are the precut for applique backgrounds, bag panels, and any pattern that needs pieces bigger than a strip. Bundles give you a curated collection with maximum flexibility.
The trade-offs, honestly: pinked edges make some quilters measure seam allowances differently (measure from the outer points), you can't re-cut a strip you've committed, and precut prints repeat within packs. None of that outweighs the speed for most projects.
Do I prewash precuts?
No — washing 2.5" strips turns them into fringe. Quilt first, wash the finished quilt (a color catcher helps with saturated batiks).
What thread for piecing precuts?
A quality 50wt cotton or fine poly — see our polyester vs cotton thread guide.
What batting for my first precut quilt?
An 80/20 blend is the forgiving default — our batting comparison breaks it down.
How do I cut precuts accurately when I need sub-cuts?
A small square ruler — the exact job of the 4-ruler core kit.

Precuts are quilting with the boring parts removed. Start with a strip pack or a 10" stacker, let the designer's color sense carry the quilt, and save yardage skills for when a pattern truly needs them.
