10" Square Quilt Size Chart

These layouts use simple patchwork: squares sewn together edge to edge, no sashing or borders. Each square adds 9½" to the quilt.

Adding borders stretches your squares. A 5" border around a 42-square throw takes it to roughly 67" × 76½" with no extra squares. Sashing does the same inside the quilt. Plan the border fabric as yardage. See our quilt size chart for backing, batting and binding yardage.

The Formula (for Any Size)

1. Decide the finished size you want, before borders.
2. Divide the width by 9.5 and round to a whole number: that is squares across.
3. Divide the length by 9.5 and round: that is squares down.
4. Multiply across × down for the squares you need. Divide by 42 and round up for the number of stacks.

Example: a 76" × 86" quilt is 8 × 9 = 72 squares, so two 42-piece stacks (84 squares) with 12 to spare.

Layer Cake vs 10" Squares vs Stackers: Same Thing?

Mostly, yes. They are all stacks of precut 10" × 10" squares from one fabric collection. The names are brand terms:

That flexibility is why a layer cake is often the best-value precut: one stack can become large blocks, charm-sized patchwork or strip-pieced units.

Best Quilts to Make With 10" Squares

• Simple patchwork: the fastest way to show off a whole collection. A beginner can finish a throw top in a weekend.
• Big half-square-triangle quilts: pair light and dark squares for zigzags, chevrons or pinwheels at a large, quick scale.
• Four-patch and nine-patch variations: cut to 5" and mix with a background fabric.
• Stack-and-slash quilts: stack several squares, slice, swap and re-sew for improv blocks that stay a consistent size.
• Big-block stars and bento-box blocks: 10" squares give you enough fabric per print to cut coordinated pieces for one block.

Tips for Sewing With 10" Squares

1. Measure first. Some precuts have pinked (zigzag) edges. Measure from point to point and sew a consistent ¼" from the outer points.

3. Lay the whole quilt out before sewing (or photograph it) to spread colors and repeat prints evenly.

Finishing the Quilt: Batting and Backing
