Give every quilt block the attention it deserves.
You put care into choosing fabric, cutting accurately, and sewing a consistent seam. Give pressing its own place in that routine. The ThreadWorks 14 × 14 Wool Pressing Mat offers a versatile square workspace for turning newly stitched patchwork into blocks that are ready for the next step.
This is the everyday size in our wool mat collection: roomy for many common quilt blocks, easy to move around your sewing room, and practical to take along when a project goes with you. Make it your regular stop between the sewing machine and the cutting station.
Why a wool surface belongs in your quilting setup
-
Warmth where you are pressing: Wool holds heat beneath the fabric, helping you achieve a crisp press through the seam area.
-
A steadier place for patchwork: The felted texture helps grip the piece while you lift and reposition your iron.
-
More attention to each seam: A dedicated block-size station makes it convenient to press as you build, rather than letting a pile of unpressed units grow.
-
A useful surface for stitched detail: Wool provides some cushioning when carefully pressing suitable embroidered work from the reverse. Always follow the design, thread, and fabric care instructions.
From pieced units to finished blocks
Use the square workspace for four-patches, nine-patches, half-square triangle arrangements, star-block sections, and small patchwork projects. A typical 12-inch finished quilt block measures 12½ inches before joining, so it fits within this mat's 14-inch surface with room around it.
Flatter, well-pressed pieces are easier to lay out and assess before the next seam. You can see what you are working with, check your alignment, and move into assembly with a block that is ready to handle.
Is 14 × 14 your best fit?
Choose this size if quilt blocks are the heart of your sewing and you want one versatile mat for daily use. The square format also works well for compact table runners, pouch panels, and other pieces that fit within the surface. For longer strip-pieced sections, consider the 14 × 18.

Care & everyday use
Spot clean only, reshape if needed, and air dry completely before storing. A wool mat is a pressing surface, not an iron rest: return your hot iron to its proper rest between presses. Heat and moisture can pass through wool, so protect the surface beneath it. Apply starch away from the mat and let treated fabric dry before pressing. Follow the care instructions supplied with your mat.
A quick question before you choose
Will every quilt block fit?
Measure the unfinished block, including seam allowances. The pressing surface is 14 inches square; larger blocks need a larger surface or careful repositioning with the rest of the fabric supported.
