The Janome Edge Guide Foot tends to sit unused in the accessory box, which is a shame, because it solves three separate problems that people usually buy three different feet for.
This tutorial covers what makes it worth reaching for: an adjustable guide that lets you place a line of stitching a consistent distance from an edge, whether that edge is a raw seam allowance, a zipper, or a finished garment edge.
What you'll learn
- Getting a consistent scant quarter-inch seam for piecing
- Using the foot when installing a zipper
- Adding clean, professional topstitching to a project
Why "scant" matters in quilting
Quilt patterns are written for a quarter-inch seam, but the thread itself and the fold of the pressed seam take up a small amount of fabric. Sewing a true quarter inch leaves blocks slightly undersized. A scant quarter — a couple of thread widths narrower — is what actually produces a block that finishes at the size the pattern says.
An adjustable guide is well suited to this because you can set it, sew a test seam, measure, and nudge it — rather than hoping a fixed foot happens to match your machine, your thread and your pressing.
The same principle, three jobs
Topstitching and zipper work are the same problem in different clothing: you need a line of stitching to stay parallel to an edge, and eyeballing it is what makes the result look homemade. A physical guide riding against the edge removes the need to watch the needle at all, which is why the stitching comes out straighter.
Before you buy
Check that the foot matches your machine's shank type and mounting style before ordering. Our guide to high shank vs low shank presser feet explains how to tell which your machine takes, and we're happy to check compatibility for you — that's what our parts request form is for.
