Choose a zipper at least as long as the bag opening — it is far easier to trim or sew past excess than to work with one that is too short. Many bag makers buy zipper by the roll for exactly this reason.
Usually the fabric was stretched slightly as it fed, or the zipper tape and fabric were not feeding at the same rate. Clipping at both ends and the middle first, then easing rather than pulling, fixes most of it.
Stop with the needle down, lift the presser foot, and slide the pull behind the needle before continuing. It is the standard way around it and keeps the stitching line straight.
A zipper foot helps, because it lets the needle stitch close to the zipper teeth without the foot riding over them. Many machines include one in the standard accessory box.
