Brother SE2000 Review (2026): Price, Specs, Pros and Cons
Verdict: the Brother SE2000 ($1,499) is the machine we recommend most to first-time embroiderers. It's the least expensive sewing-and-embroidery combo we carry with a 5" x 7" embroidery field, it sends designs wirelessly from Brother's Artspira app, and it's a full computerized sewing machine the rest of the time. Its limits are the 5" x 7" maximum design size and single-needle color changes.

What the SE2000 is
The SE2000 is a computerized sewing machine and an embroidery machine in one body. Attach the embroidery unit and you're hooping designs; take it off and it's your everyday sewing machine. For sewists with one table and one budget, that is the whole appeal.
Pros
- 5" x 7" field at the lowest price among the combos we carry. Many embroidery designs are digitized for 5" x 7", so you're not stuck with 4" x 4" monograms.
- Wireless design transfer. Built-in wireless LAN pairs with Brother's Artspira app, so designs go from phone or tablet to machine without a USB stick.
- A real sewing machine too. 241 built-in stitches and eight included feet cover garments, hems, home décor and everyday projects.
- 193 built-in designs to stitch before you buy any.
Cons
- 5" x 7" is the ceiling. Large quilt blocks and jacket backs need a machine with a bigger field.
- One needle. You re-thread for every color change; multi-needle machines change colors automatically.
- Flatbed only. Finished caps, sleeves and bags are easier on machines with a free-arm cylinder, like Brother's PR series.
- Not every hoop fits. The SAMFM100 4" x 4" magnetic hoop is not on Brother's SE2000 compatibility list, so we don't recommend it for this machine.

What you'll need with the SE2000

- Embroidery thread for the top. It isn't the same as sewing thread; see embroidery vs sewing thread.
- Needles: Brother specifies home sewing machine needles, 65/9–100/16. For embroidery, use embroidery needles such as Schmetz Embroidery 75/11; for sewing, Universal 80/12 covers most medium fabrics.

Buy it if: you want to try real embroidery without a big spend; you want one machine that sews and embroiders in a small space; or you design on a phone or tablet and want the machine to meet you there.

Can the SE2000 embroider hats or large jacket backs?
It's built for flat embroidery up to 5" x 7": monograms, motifs, quilt labels and small-to-medium designs. Caps and large jacket backs call for a machine with a bigger field or cap frames, such as Brother's PR multi-needle machines.
Is the SE2000 good for a small business?
You can start one on it. The limits you'll reach are re-threading for every color change and the 5" x 7" field. When stitch-out time becomes the bottleneck, look at multi-needle machines.
SE2000 or SE700?
The SE700 ($579.99) has a 4" x 4" field; the SE2000 ($1,499) has a 5" x 7" field. If you want larger designs than monograms and small motifs, the SE2000 is the one to get.
