Pins are the notion everyone owns and nobody thinks about — until a too-thick pin leaves permanent holes in silk, a too-soft pin bends inside eight quilt layers, or a spilled box sends 200 of them into the carpet. Three variables define every pin: diameter (0.4mm extra-fine to 0.8mm+ heavy), length (short appliqué pins to 2"+ quilting pins), and head type (glass, plastic, flat flower, metal ball).
