If your sewing machine is running but the fabric is not moving forward, you are likely dealing with a feed issue. The feed dogs are responsible for pulling the fabric through the machine evenly while you sew. When they are not working properly, the fabric may stay in place, move unevenly, or require you to push or pull it manually.
This can lead to uneven stitches, fabric bunching, or even damage to your project.
The good news is that most feeding problems are simple to fix once you understand what controls fabric movement.
Fabric movement depends on three main components working together:
the feed dogs (metal teeth under the needle plate)
the presser foot pressure
the stitch settings and machine setup
If any of these are off, the fabric will not move correctly.
Many machines have a setting that lowers the feed dogs for free-motion sewing or embroidery. If this is turned on accidentally, the machine will sew in place without moving the fabric.
locate the feed dog lever or switch
raise the feed dogs back up
test again
This is one of the most common and easiest fixes.
If the presser foot is not down, the fabric will not be held against the feed dogs.
lower the presser foot before sewing
make sure it is fully engaged
If the pressure is too light, the fabric will not grip properly. If it is too heavy, it can drag or distort the fabric.
adjust presser foot pressure if your machine allows it
increase pressure for thicker fabrics
decrease slightly for delicate materials
Lint buildup can prevent the feed dogs from gripping the fabric.
remove the needle plate
clean out lint and debris
ensure feed dogs are moving freely
Some presser feet are not designed for standard feeding.
switch to a standard presser foot
avoid specialty feet unless needed
Certain materials can be difficult for feed dogs to grip.
Examples:
very thick layers
leather or vinyl
silky or slippery fabrics
use the correct needle
adjust pressure
consider a walking foot for difficult fabrics
If you pull fabric manually, you can interfere with the feed system.
let the machine feed the fabric naturally
guide gently without forcing it
If none of the above fixes work, there may be a mechanical issue.
Possible causes:
worn feed dogs
internal timing issues
damaged components
In this case, the machine may need servicing.
clean your machine regularly
check feed dog settings before sewing
use proper presser foot pressure
avoid forcing fabric
use correct needle and thread
A sewing machine not feeding fabric is usually caused by a simple setup issue rather than a serious problem. By checking feed dogs, presser foot position, and machine settings, you can fix the issue quickly and get back to smooth, even stitching.
